Tretyakov Gallery
The Tretyakov Gallery is the most important storehouse of Russian art in the world. Located in Moscow,
it is renowned for its collection of famous Russian icons and
masterpieces by Russia's artistic geniuses, including Repin, Vrubel,
Kandinsky, Malevich and others. The original Tretyakov Gallery houses a
collection of Russian art that dates to the end of the 19th century. The
New Tretyakov Gallery contains works of 20th century Russian artists.
History of the Tretyakov Gallery:
The
Tretyakov Gallery was founded by Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, a
Russian businessman who also had a passionate interest in art. He
donated his collection to the city of Moscow, and towards the end of the
19th century, the Tretyakov Gallery opened to display his collection.
Works of Art in the Tretyakov Gallery:
Works of art that can be seen at the main building of the Tretyakov Gallery include icons by Andrei Rublev, Repin's Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan,
the portrait of Pushkin by Kiprinsky, the portrait of Catherine the
Great with her dogs by Borovikovsky, and other recognizable work by
famous Russian artists and of historic Russian figures.
Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi :
The
Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi is a part of the Tretyakov Gallery.
This church was used by Tretyakov himself and now showcases treasured
Russian icons.
New Tretyakov Gallery :
The
New Tretyakov Gallery, linked administratively to the original Tretyakov
Gallery, contains modern Russian masterpieces, including works of
Socialist Realism. Here visitors will find Malevich's Black Square, Kandinsky's Composition VII, and works by Chagall and other modern Russian artists.
